We have started the laying of the wood flooring. We decided to lay the flooring and then build the walls. We are doing this because we may one day, after the kids are gone, want to remodel the upstairs. This way it will only need a few holes filled rather then try to fill in long 4 inch troughs from where the walls are now. We figured it will be really hard to find the wood flooring that we are using 15 years from now. Who wants to store a bunch of wood flooring just in case? We don’t even have an attic!
We started the first board in the play room. Jim will have to custom cut and glue/nail in the board that goes in front of that first one that we could nail with the cleat gun. I am sure he will get to do this in all the tight spots around the dome. We got a system down. Jim measured the special cuts, Bill cut them and Peter filled in the whole boards. I got to whack the cleat gun. Bill also kept up on the end pieces which will be cut off straight before we drywall.
We got most of the play room done and need to locate the bathroom walls. We are going to tile in the bathroom so we will only need to do the hall in that area. That is where we are for now. Stay tuned!
We finished installing the hard wood flooring upstairs. It looks great but of course we learned a lesson, start flooring on a common wall when the floor splits (like a horse shoe).
This flooring is slightly slippery, so we will be cutting out the flooring at the second floor landing and installing a unique (rough slate like) tile design to add another unique feature to an already unique house. We are using the same tile on the risers. It will be in keeping with over-all house design.
Next, we will install the balusters and rails to improve safety. After the construction is done we will take off the temporary plywood stair treads and install oak treads.
